What are terpenes? Terpenes are organic, naturally-occurring compounds found not only in cannabis, but in everything. They are what make up all the varying scents and odors we experience throughout our days. Especially in cannabis, terpenes can also result in a wide variety of different effects once ingested.
For example, limonene is commonly associated with fruitier, citrusy aromas. It is often found in everyday items such as cosmetics, cleaning products and even fruit rinds! When consumed, limonene offers users a wide variety of benefits including stress relief, antibacterial properties, and as an aid in absorbing and processing other terpenes. Since multiple terpenes are present in every cannabis cultivar, the effects can also combine and interact, leading to varying medicinal benefits. These benefits can include reduced inflammation, improved digestion, increased appetite, or even a better night of sleep.
Terpenes, as well as cannabinoids, work together to provide the full range of benefits that cannabis is known for, as previously discussed in our ‘What is the Full Spectrum Effect?’ post. Without terpenes, cannabis and the rest of the world would be a very bland place!
